Just a few minutes after the Supreme Court reserved its judgement on Maharashtra government formation for tomorrow, the Congress party staged a protest in Parliament today. The protest was led by Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi.
The party protested inside both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. “There is no point in my asking the question as democracy has been murdered in Maharashtra,” Mr Gandhi said in Parliament.
The Lok Sabha was adjourned following severe protests by Congress MPs inside the House. The MPs stormed the Well of the House despite the Speaker Om Birla’s repeated requests not to do so. When the MPs refused to go their respective seats, the Speaker ordered the Marshals to remove two members of Congress- TN Prathapan and Hibi Eden from the House.
Leaders of opposition parties raised slogans of ‘stop this murder of democracy’ during the Question Hour in Lok Sabha. Chaos broke out when Congress MP Manish Tiwari raised that several MPs were manhandled by Marshals today.
“This has never happened in the history of this house. It is condemnable that even Female MPs were not spared”, said Tiwari.
A similar scene was witnessed in the Rajya Sabha as well. The house was adjourned till 2pm, after Congress MPs along with other opposition parties– including DMK, Left– began shouting slogans against the government for its role in the Saturday coup in Maharashtra.
