Lohri 2022: Significance, History and here’s how to celebrate this auspicious occasion

Today India is celebrating the auspicious occasion of Lohri. This occasion is celebrated every year on January 13. It falls one day prior to Makar Sakranti in Paush Magh month. This day is dedicated to God of Fire, Agni. In fact, this is said to be one of the shortest days and has the lengthiest night. People also know this festival as Lal Loi or Lohadi.

It is usually celebrated in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and North Eastern states of India with great pomp and show. It is also referred as the Harvest Festival.

What significance does Lohri hold?

Lohri also holds special importance for a newly-married couple or a newborn child and is celebrated with great enthusiasm on these occasions as it symbolises fertility.

What is the history behind Lohri?

According to the tradition of Punjabi, Lohri’s back history can be traced to when a legendary Punjabi hero, Dulla Bhatti had rescued innocent girls from the clutches of lustful men. He had rescued two Brahmin girls, Sundri and Mundri, from Akbar. Dulla Bhatti and became their godfather and it is believed that he married them off to Lohri with great festivity. In this way, he directly challenged the emperor. In fact, their tale was turned out in a sung which is sung during the auspicious occasion of Lohri every year.

Why it is celebrated?

Lohri is celebrated due to the harvesting of crops. It marks the end of the winter season and is looked upon as the harvest festival, mainly for the Rabi crop.

How it is celebrated?

Lohri is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm. It is celebrated by lighting bonfires. Around the bonfire, people dance and exchange gifts among friends and family members. Also, they enjoy relishing food such as Makki ki Roti and Sarso ka Saag with Til Laddo and Gud Gazzak.
