One person was reportedly shot dead and several others were injured following a clash during the immersion of a Durga idol in Bihar’s Munger district on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. The incident took place during a clash between the police and the mob at Durga idol immersion event in Munger district of Bihar. The video of police firing has widely circulated on social media that has sparked anger among the people of the state just a day before first phase voting.
At least 27 people injured in the incident. Those who have injured in a clash admitted to Sadar hospital and other private hospitals of Bihar for treatment. The Police claimed that some anti-social elements targeted the police. The police said the mob suddenly started stone pelting that injured 20 policemen. The police initially used tear gas shells which proved ineffective. The police said some of the revelers used firearms in the clash.
Superintendent of Police Munger Lipi Singh said the situation is under control at present. Bihar Police detained more than 100 people who were involved in the firing incident. Police have also recovered 12 empty cartridges from the spot. The man who died was identified as Anurag Poddar. A relative of the Anurag said, he died after he was shot in the head.
Lok Janshakti Party leader Chirag Paswan and student leader Kanhaiya Kumar were among those who reported the incident via twitter post. Paswan said devotees were fired upon in the Taliban-like rule of Kumar. Kanhaiya Kumar also sought an action against the policemen involved in firing. The Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi said the Election Commission should investigate and take action against the culprits as soon as possible.
The political campaigns of the political parties for the first phase of Bihar Assembly Election ended on Monday. Voting for the first phase of Bihar Polls will be held on October 28.
