Daniil Medvedev stunned world no. 1 Novak Djokovic to win the US Open final on Sunday. With this win, Medvedev also shattered the Djokovic’s dream to win the Grand Slam and his 21st Grand Slam title, which would have make him the only player to have 21 Grand Slam title in Men’s tennis putting ahead of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Russian Medvedev thrashed Serbian Djokovic in straight sets by 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, which denied Djokovic the chance to win all Slam titles in a year. This is Medvedev’s first Grand Slam title in his career. Earlier this year Djokovic had defeated Medvedev in the Australian Open 2021 final.
Earlier on Saturday, UK’s Emma Raducanu also won her first Slam title, which makes Raducanu and Medvedev to become the first pair to have won 1st Grand Slam title at US Open since Pete Sampras and Gabriel Sabatiny in 1990.
Djokovic had a golden chance to sweep all Slam titles in a single year for the first time since Rod Laver in 1969. Australian legend Laver was also in the stands to watch the game. This year’s Slam tournaments are over and Djokovic missed the chance to go ahead of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to have most no. of Grand Slam titles. Federer and Nadal both were out of this tournament due to injury.
The 25 year old and world no. 2 Medvedev, became the third Russian man to win a Grand Slam title after Yevgeny Kafelnikov in 1996 French Open and 1999 Australian Open and Marat Safin at the 2000 US Open and 2005 Australian Open.
Medvedev won his first Grand Slam title on the day of his third wedding anniversary. His wife Daria was also in the strands to witness him clinching the title. After winning the title Medvedev addressed his wife during the trophy presentation and said that, she has been his greatest support and motivation she always encouraged him to do extraordinary things.
