Mohan Delkar, an independent MP from Dadra and Nagar Haveli, was found dead at a hotel in Mumbai’s Marine drive on Monday. The reports suggest that the Lok Sabha MP died by suicide. The 58-year-old is survived by his wife and two children.
According to police, Delkar’s body was found in the hotel under the limits of the Marine Drive and a suicide note has been recovered from the spot. The investigation is underway and the exact cause of death will be known after post-mortem is conducted, said Mumbai Police’s spokesperson DCP Chaitanya Siriprolu.
The body has been sent to JJ hospital for postmortem. The senior police officials including Joint Commissioner of Police, Law & Order, Vishwas Nangre Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police, South Region, Satyanarayan Chaudhary, have reached the hotel for questioning the hotel staff to get details about Delkar and his stay.
Shocked by the tragic news, Fatehsinh Chauhan, the ex-president of Varishtha Panchayat of Dadra & Nagar Haveli, tweeted that he was shocked beyond imagination on having learnt about the passing away of Shri Mohan S Delkar, Member of Parliament for Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Our political ideologies have been different and we have stood opposed to each other, added Chauhan.
Delkar, a seven-term MP, was Congress president of Dadra and Nagar Haveli when he quit the party in 2019 to contest the national election as an independent. He was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha in May 2019, which turned out to be his seventh term in the House.
He was also held as a member of the Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice and a member of the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Home Affairs of the Lower House.
Last year, Mohan Delkar’s support to the JDU for the local election in Dadra and Nagar Haveli after a meeting with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, resulted in a loss of seats to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the local polls.
