The Madhya Pradesh government on Monday removed its Directorate of Public Prosecution in-charge Special DG Purushottam Sharma after a video of him beating up his wife went viral. Reports said Sharma’s wife had accused him of having an extramarital affair with a journalist based in Bhopal. Sharma has been suspended and transferred after the video went viral.
Reports said Sharma and his wife have had strained relations for several years but the latest flare-up turned ugly after the wife claimed to have caught Purushottam Sharma red-handed at the journalist’s house. Meanwhile, Sharma accused his wife of ruining his family’s reputation and stabbing him with a knife, to which she said she had a scissor for self-defence.
Purushottam Sharma denied charges levelled by his wife and son, saying it is a matter between him and his wife. Sharma said he and his wife have been married for 32 years and they both have been living happily for so long, and his wife is still living with him with all the luxury. He said if his wife was upset with him, she would have left him much earlier.
The state home department issued orders removing Sharma from his post with immediate effect and directed him to report to the home department at the state secretariat. Narottam Mishra, the Madhya Pradesh Home Minister, said he will look into the matter though he came to know of it via media. The State Women’s Commission chairperson Shobha Oza said the government should take strict action against the IPS officer as soon as possible. She also said that the commission will take suo motu cognisance of the incident.

The TV journalist has also lodged a police complaint against Sharma’s wife and son saying her reputation was being besmirched by the two. She claimed the officer was a father-like figure to her and behaved with her in that light.
