Mullah Baradar to lead Afghan government, Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada to hold position of supreme leader: Reports

Nearly 20 days after taking over Afghanistan, the Taliban are now preparing to form a government. Taliban co-founder Mullah Baradar will lead a new Afghan government that could be announced soon, new agency Reuters reported on Friday. Mullah Baradar was the head of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar.

However, other top positions in the Taliban government will be assigned to Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, the son of late Taliban founder Mullah Omar, and Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, who studied in India, the report said.

Reports said the Taliban government can be announced at any time today or tomorrow. The Taliban have confirmed that they are going to make their biggest religious leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada the supreme leader of Afghanistan. Mulla Akhundzada’s personality is very mysterious and he has not been seen in public for a long time.

Who is Mullah Baradar?

Mullah Ghani Baradar was arrested by the US intelligence agency CIA and Pakistan in an operation in 2010. After this, Baradar remained in Pakistan jail for 8 years. In 2018, Pakistan released him after US pressure. Baradar was then transferred to Qatar where he was appointed the head of the Taliban’s political office in Doha. He then signed the agreement that led the US military to withdraw its 20-year campaign.

The Taliban had captured Kabul on August 15, after which President Ashraf Ghani had fled the country with his family. However, the militant group have faced resistance in Panjshir Valley, the stronghold of their rival Northern Alliance, with reports of heavy fighting and casualties.

Several thousand fighters of regional militias and remnants of the government’s armed forces have massed in the rugged valley under the leadership of Ahmad Massoud, the son of former Mujahideen commander Ahmad Shah Massoud.

Panjshir is the only province in Afghanistan that has not been captured by the Taliban till date. Panjshir remained a scourge for the Taliban even during the Islamic Emirate’s rule from 1996 to 2001.
