Days after Navjot Singh Sidhu was appointed as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief by the party high command, he held a meeting at his residence in Amritsar on Wednesday with scores of party MLAs backing him, his office claimed. The new PCC chief called the meeting winds of change. Sidhu also visited Golden Temple to offer prayers.
However, after offering prayers, Sidhu and his 62 MLAs plan to visit the city’s Shri Valmiki Mandir Ram Tirath and Shri Durgiana Mandir. A luxury bus was seen entering the residential premises, likely to ferry them.
After weeks of infighting and in face of strong opposition by Captain Amarinder Singh, Sidhu was appointed as the new PCC chief Sunday.
Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who fought fiercely against Sidhu’s appointment, before finally conceding and saying the latter should at least apologize publicly for his diatribe against his government
However, one MLA rejected a demand from Singh’s camp that the party chief apologise to the Chief Minister publicly.
“Why should Sidhu apologise. It’s not a public issue. The Chief Minister has not solved many issues. In that case, he should also apologise to the public,” Pargat Singh, Congress MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, said at Sidhu’s residence.
I have faith that the 2022 Assembly polls will be won because of Sidhu. The CM’s advisors are misleading him. Due to this, Punjab is going backwards,” said Madan Lal Jalalpur, the Ghanaur MLA, at Sidhu’s residence.
The Congress high command also named four working presidents instead of the expected three as a placatory gesture towards Amarinder. Singh had suggested different names of his choice for working presidents and PCC chief — Cabinet minister Vijay Inder Singla, Tarsem DC, Raj Kumar Chabbewal, and Ajit Inder Singh Mofar, however, he was ignored. The party instead appointed Sangat Singh Gilzian, Sukhwinder Singh Danny, Kuljit Nagra and Pawan Goyal as working Presidents on Sunday.
