Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has all the qualities that a Prime Minister should have, but he is not in the PM race, his party, Janata Dal (United) said on Sunday in its Council meeting in Patna.
Calling it non sense, Kumar told the reporters that he neither want nor expect to become the Prime Minister.
The party is an ally of the BJP at the Centre as well as in the state.
Senior JD(U) leader KC Tyagi, who briefed the media after the meeting, told reporters that Nitish Kumar is not a candidate for the post of the prime minister.
The JD(U) is the most trusted member of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the leader of the alliance, although, Nitish Kumar has all the qualities required in a prime minister, Tyagi said.
The JD(U) leader also said the party would continue to demand a caste census which has not taken place since British rule in the country. The party is waiting for a positive response from the PM Modi, he said.
Senior JD(U) leader Upendra Kushwaha had earlier called Nitish Kumar a PM material. Following which, the political circles have been rife with speculation on whether all is well within the NDA or Kumar is indeed eyeing the post of Prime Minister in 2024.
After backing opposition on Pegasus and teaming up with its rival Rashtriya Janata Dal on caste census, the key ally JD(U) turned up the heat on its senior alliance partner.
The party also differed with BJP on the issue of population control and believes that public awareness and girls education will be much more effective in checking population growth instead of formulating a law.
