Nitish Kumar is all set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the fourth consecutive term on Monday. But this time he is likely to have two deputies from ally BJP as the poll results have downgraded him to second position in the ruling alliance. The BJP is also set to take over the position of Speaker in the Bihar assembly.
The decision was taken in a late night meeting between Nitish Kumar and top BJP officials, reports said.
Sushil Modi announced on Twitter that Renu Devi and Tarkishore Prasad will be the new deputy Chief Ministers. Prasad has already been named the leader of the BJP legislature party. While, Renu Devi said she would follow party’s orders.
Sushil Kumar Modi had been Nitish Kumar’s deputy since 2005 except for the time the Chief Minister formed the government in alliance with the RJD and the Congress. When Kumar revived his ties and formed a government in alliance with the BJP, Sushil Modi once again became his deputy.
But, the election result left Nitish Kumar’s party with fewer seats, resulting in many changes within the alliance, reports said. Sushil Modi is likely to be sent to the centre as a Union Minister. On Sunday, the BJP dropped Modi as leader of its legislature group in Patna.
The BJP and the Sangh Parivar gave me so much in my political career of 40 years. I will perform the duties and responsibilities that will be given to me. No one can take away the post of the party worker, Sushil Modi wrote on his Twitter handle.
Nitish Kumar and the BJP retained power by clinching 125 seats in the 243-member assembly. The Chief Minister’s party JD(U) ended at the third place in the state with the Rashtriya Janata Dal of Tejashwi Yadav winning the most number of seats and remaining single-largest party, followed closely by the BJP.
