Trinamool Congress MP Nusrat Jahan has been reportedly getting death threats on social media for posing as Goddess Durga. The Bengali actor had posted on Instagram a photograph posing as Goddess Durga for advertisements for a clothing line on September 17 after which she started receiving threats on social media.
The actor-turned-politician has asked for security from the Ministry of External Affairs as she is currently in London for a shoot since September 17.
NDTV reported that a close aide of the actor said they had taken up the matter with both the Indian government and the West Bengal government. Both Union and state governments are in turn coordinating with the Indian Embassy in London to provide protection to the TMC MP. The actor has always stood for her secular and inclusive viewpoints and these trolls do not deter her, the aide said.
This is not the first time the actor has been targeted on social media. In 2019, Nusrat Jahan had performed Durga Puja and some clerics were up in arms saying Islam doesn’t allow her to worship an idol. Photos of her at Durga Puja pandals last year with her husband had gone viral and drawn abuse. She was abused for marrying a Hindu, wearing sindoor and participating in a rath yatra soon after. Speaking about the controversy, she had said she didn’t care and that she enjoyed all festivals.
The election scene is getting rather warm in West Bengal with the BJP choosing to nominate more Bengalis amonth their office-bearers at the national level. Former Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy has been named BJP vice-president and Anupam Hazra national secretary. The dropping of longtime worker Rahul Sinha from any role in the JP Nadda team indicates a different tack from the party ahead of elections in the state in mid-2021.
