Omicron scare: Foods to avoid for better lung health

The coronavirus pandemic has taught us all the importance of being healthy. With the new Covid-19 variant, Omicron being detected in several countries across the globe, a sense of fear has emerged among the people.

The new variant of concern is reported to be highly transmissible and have the potential to bring the third wave of Covid-19. The deadly variant was first detected in South Africa and not has spread in several other countries including Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Netherlands, Portugal, Scotland, South Africa, Switzerland, and the UK.

Omicron scare

To restrain the spread of Omicron, wearing masks and using sanitisers are important. However, these practices do not guarantee 100 percent protection against the deadly virus. Keeping good care of oneself by adopting healthy food habits and lifestyle is of utmost importance during such a dire situation.

As per reports, about 14% of Covid-19 cases are severe and affects both lungs of the infected. The virus caused swelling that fill the lungs with fluid and debris, hence causing pneumonia.

So, if you want to boost your lung health, here are foods that you should avoid eating.

Foods to avoid for better lung health

Ice cream

Ice cream and other dairy products increase the amount of mucus and phlegm in the body. This can lead to coughing causing pain and wheezing in patients. It is advised to consume milk alternatives like oat, soy milk, and almonds.

Processed meats

Frozen or processed meats contain nitrates that are added by brands to help extend the expiration date. These nitrates can lead to serious lungs infection, therefore, it is advised to buy no nitrates added label meats.

Soda

Soda contains carbon dioxide which leads to bloating and gas. Apart from CO2, sodas also have a high sugar content that increases inflammation and lead to weight gain.

Chocolate

Chocolate is a high caffeine content that affects the heart rate. It also contains high sugar and low nutrients which make it a bad food choice for people conscious about their lung health.
