The ODI series between Pakistan and New Zealand has been cancelled due to security reasons. In a press release New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said, they are abandoning their tour of Pakistan following a New Zealand government security alert.
New Zealand was set to play the first of three ODI matches on Friday at Rawalpindi stadium, before moving to Lahore for a five-match T20 series. This was the first time New Zealand came to Pakistan soil to play any bilateral series since 2003.
NZC in their statement said, they were all set to play Pakistan this evening in Rawalpindi, before moving to Lahore for a five-match T20 series. “However, following an escalation in the New Zealand Government threat levels for Pakistan, and advice from NZC security advisors on the ground, it has been decided the BLACKCAPS will not continue with the tour” added, New Zealand Cricket.
This announcement came minutes after the various sources revealed the cancellation of the first match due to three covid positive cases from both of the teams.
Although, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that, they have made full proof security arrangements for any visiting teams. According to statement issued by PCB, the Prime Minister of both countries spoke to each-other and Pak PM, Imran Khan assured that, they have one of the best intelligence system in the world and that no security threats of any kind exists for the visiting team.
PCB also confirmed that, they are willing to continue the series on scheduled days, but if matches are going to be cancelled, cricket lovers in Pakistan and world will be disappointed.
According to sources, the Interior Minister of Pakistan will hold a press conference at 5:00 pm to shed more light on the matter.
