Pakistan beat South Africa by seven wickets at National Stadium in Karachi to go up by 1-0 in the two-match home series against South Africa. This is Pakistan’s only fifth Test win over proteas. In the second innings the hosts had to chase a target of 88 runs, which they managed after losing three wickets after the initial hiccups. This was Pakistan first win under the leadership of new skipper Babar Azam.
Batting first, South Africa had scored 220 runs in their first innings. Pakistan got a lead of 158 runs after scoring 378 runs in their first innings. Proteas looked pretty comfortable in the second innings and were 175-1 at one point hoping to set up a big total for the hosts to chase. However, they suffered a major collapse and were bundled out for 245 runs. Debutant Nauman Ali was the star of the match as he capped five wickets to guide his team closer to victory. Yasir shah also bagged four wickets in the second innings. Chasing the target of 88 runs, Pakistan did not start well, but kept their calm and reached the score at the loss of three wickets. Azhar Ali and Fawad Alam were the two not out batsmen on crease when Pakistan reached the target. Nortje sent back two batsmen for south Africa while Maharaj took one wicket.
The second Test of the series will be played at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium from February 4. Pakistan are hosting South Africa for the first time in 13 years. The country did not host any international match between 2009-2015 after the deadly attack on sri Lankan cricket team.
Pakistan hosted a Test for the first time since the attack in December 2019 against Sri Lanka, followed by a home series against England.
