Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (Sunday, Feb 24) launched PM-KISAN scheme from Gorakhpur’s Fertilizer Corporation of India (FCI) grounds with the press of a button.
The scheme was announced by interim Finance Minister Piyush Goyal during the vote-on-account Budget session on February 1, 2019.
Beginning his address with the slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’, PM Modi said “I congratulate those engaged in animal rearing, fisheries and dairy farmers for getting connected to Kisan credit card scheme.”
Addressing the gathering Modi said he feels privileged to transfer the first installment under PM-KISAN scheme to 1.01 crore farmers today. “Nearly Rs 2021 crore have been transferred to the bank accounts of these farmers today. I have been told farmers from 21 centre-ruled states will benefit from the scheme,” he added.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojna (PM-KISAN), Rs 6000 will be given per year to the small and marginal farmer families having combined land holding or ownership upto 2 hectares.
The amount will be given in three installments of Rs 2000 each.
“The amount will be transferred directly to the bank account of beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). DBT will ensure transparency in the entire process and will save time for the farmers,” a statement from PMO said.
Minutes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the cash transfer scheme, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati slammed it as an “insult” to farmers.
“Rs 500 a month to poor farmers under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi is an insult of farmers. Farmers believe in their labour and want remunerative price of their produce but BJP mentality to give them little monetary help is atrocious and arrogant. BJP has failed to fulfil their promise,” Mayawati tweeted.

Meanwhile, PM Modi took a dip in Sangam at Prayagraj Kumbh Mela. “Had the good fortune of taking a holy dip at the Kumbh. Prayed for the well being of 130 crore Indians,” he said after the holy dip.
