Happy Pongal 2022: Easy and beautiful rangoli ideas to begin the harvest season

Pongal is a Hindu festival that is celebrated over four days in South Indian states, especially in Tamil Nadu. Pongal symbolizes the beginning of Uttarayan, the sun’s six-month journey northward. Pongal means overflowing or boiling, which has the aspect of wealth and abundance. Pongal is a festival commemorating God’s provision of a plentiful harvest throughout the year.

The celebrations of Pongal have begun today, January 14, 2022, with Boghi Pongal, followed by Surya Pongal on January 15, 2022, and Mattu Pongal on January 16, 2022. The last day of celebrations will take place on January 17, 2022, at Kaanum Pongal.

Pongal is also known as Uttarayan Punyakalam. The festivals are celebrated by decorating houses and serving sweets and savouries to Lord Surya, the Sun god.

One of the most famous traditions on Pongal is making Rangoli or Pongal kolams. The first day of Pongal marks the last day of Marghazi, Tamil month. On this Bhogi Pongal, people discard their old possessions by coming together and burning them. As they part from their old belongings, people also buy new possessions. New clothes are worn as people pray to Lord Indra, the god of rain.

Surya Pongal is the first day of Tamil month Tai. The Uttarayana begins on this day, when the sun enters Makara’s 10th house of the zodiac (Capricorn). The Pongal dish is prepared in celebration of the festival.

The third day is celebrated as Mattu Pongal. Mattu literally refers to cattle. To celebrate this day, cattle are decorated with painted horns and flower garlands.

The last day is celebrated as Kanum Pongal. Kanum refers to visiting. People celebrate this day by meeting with their loved ones.
