Rana Gurjit Singh was also part of former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’ cabinet in 2017, but he was removed from the cabinet in 2018, over a sand mining scandal. Rana Gurjit Singh is one of the richest and powerful MLAs of Punjab.
Hours before the oath-taking ceremony at Raj Bhavan, six Congress MLAs wrote to Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, over the inclusion of Rana Gurjit Singh and requested to drop the name of Gurjit Singh immediately. Instead they asked for a dalit face in cabinet, considering the assembly elections in 2022.
On the other hand, Balbir Singh Sidhu and Gurpreet Singh Kangar, who were minsters in Captain Amarinder Singh’s government, held a joint press conference and expressed their feelings that, why they were not considered for positions in cabinet?
The new cabinet has been designed in way that power has not been given to already powerful leaders, considering the Punjab assembly elections in 2022. Congress is likely to contest 2022 assembly election in the leadership of Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.
