BJP’s Kolkata candidate Shikha Mitra, widow of Congress leader Somen Mitra, rejects party nomination

BJP's Kolkata candidate and late Somen Mitra’s wife, Shikha Mitra rejects nomination as a party candidate

Shortly after the BJP released its second list of candidates for the West Bengal elections on Thursday, the party candidate for Chowringhee assembly seat in Kolkata, Shikha Mitra said she had turned down BJP’s offer to join the party but has still been nominated as a party candidate.

The BJP announced the name of Shikha Mitra, who is the wife of former West Bengal Congress President late Somen Mitra, as the BJP candidate for the Chowringhee assembly seat in Kolkata while announcing its list for the last phases of polling in Bengal.

As soon as the BJP announced the list and her name came out, Shikha Mitra blasted the saffron party for naming her as a candidate despite refusing its offer to join the party. Mitra told reporters in Kolkata that Suvendu Adhikari had met her a few weeks back and offered her to join the BJP, but she had rejected the proposal.

Shikha Mitra said she is embarrassed by the sudden announcement of her name as a BJP candidate.

She said she got to know from the media that her name has been announced as a BJP candidate. They are completely different from the people of Bengal, how can she join the BJP, asked Shikha Mitra while also adding that the party leaders have lost sanity.

She had immediately released a video, saying her permission was not taken before nominating her as Chowringhee candidate. In the video posted by her son and West Bengal General Secretary of Congress, Rohan Mitra, she said the news of her candidature is wrong and that she will not be standing with the BJP.

Apart from Shikha Mitra, BJP also announced the name of TMC MLA Mala Saha’s husband Tarun Saha’s name as a party candidate. Tarun Saha, too, refused to accept the nomination and said he stands firmly with his party.
