Watch: Sunil Gavaskar presents test cap to debutant Shreyas Iyer, Rahul Dravid revives Team India’s bygone tradition

Delhi Capitals middle order batter Shreyas Iyer, who has been quite a success in the middle-order in white-ball cricket, will be batting at No.4 in the 3-match test series against New Zealand

Delhi Capitals middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer on Thursday made his Test debut in the first Test match of 3-match series against New Zealand at the Green Park in Kanpur.

Continuing head coach Rahul Dravid’s push to revive the bygone tradition of new entrants getting the coveted possession from greats of Indian cricket, the former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar has presented the test cap to debutant Shreyas Iyer.

The BCCI has shared the video of the memorable moment for a debutant in which Gavaskar was seen sharing words of encouragement before handing over the cap to Iyer, who kissed the batch before putting it on. Iyer was then congratulated by his teammates with warm hugs.

Iyer became the 302nd player to make his Test debut for team India. It was India’s greatest opener and former skipper Gavaskar, who was invited by Dravid to present the cap to a fellow Mumbaikar.

Earlier, the team India head coach had invited Ajit Agarkar to present cap to T20I debutant Harshal Patel, who was the most successful bowler of the recently concluded edition of the Indian Premier League.

The culture of presenting the national cap is very much prevalent in Australia. There was a time when ex-cricketers were presented the national cap to the debutants but in the past few years, it has either been the captain or some senior player or at best a support staff presenting the cap to debutants.

Iyer had gone through a brilliant IPL season for Delhi Capitals, in which he scored 519 runs.

Iyer, who made his India debut back in 2017, has played 54 white-ball matches, scoring 1393 runs at an average of 42.7 in ODIs and 27.6 in T20Is.
