Sonam Kapoor says pay gap between men and women actors is ridiculous

Sonam’s comments come shortly after actor Taapsee Pannu said the male actors who started their careers with her make 3-5 times more money than her.

Actor Sonam Kapoor has described the pay gap between male and female actors in the film industry as ridiculous. She said she doesn’t bag the roles for which she demands just pay, but she can afford to let go of certain opportunities because she is privileged.

In an interview with Vogue magazine, when asked about the existing pay discrimination in the Bollywood industry, the Neerja actor, said the pay gap is ridiculous, it has not changed at all. The actor said she can stand up to it, but then she doesn’t get those roles and she is ok with that.

Further, she said she is privileged and isn’t afraid to make difficult choices. Over the past two or three years, she has realised that she has no right to judge anybody. I’m very privileged, so making difficult choices isn’t really difficult. I’d better be making those choices, added the actor.

Sonam’s comments come shortly after actor Taapsee Pannu said the male actors who started their careers with her make 3-5 times more money than her. Recently, Taapsee in an interview had said that if a female actor asks more, she is termed difficult and problematic and if a man asks more it’s a mark of his success. She said the difference is, the men who started with her earn 3-5 times more than what she does and the gap keeps increasing as we go in the higher star category.

On the professional front, Sonam was last seen in  2019’s The Zoya Factor alongside actor Dulquer Salman. She also appeared in a cameo in AK vs AK, in which she played a version of herself, alongside her father Anil Kapoor and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.
