The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Tuesday morning hit the biggest training camp of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror group in Balakot in Pakistan, eliminating a number of terrorists and their trainers, 12 days after a Jaish-e-Mohammed suicide bomber Adil Ahmed Dar rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into a bus ferrying CRPF jawans in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district. APN’s popular debate Mudda discussed the issue. Anchorperson Akshay Singh posed the questions to panelists, including the Congress’s Saif Khan, BJP’s NP Singh, Kashmir expert Vijay Raina, foreign affairs expert JK Tripathi, defence experts Lt Gen AK Bakshi and Maj Gen (retd) AK Chaturvedi, and APN consultant Govind Pant Raju.

Bakshi said: “This is a planned attack. Pak had been warned several times. Intelligence was gained and after precise information about the JeM base in Balakot, a precision attack was launched, to ward off collateral damage. Covert operations help us to protect our sovereignity. Balakot was targeted. There are two Balakots, one in PoK and the other is well in Pakistan. So this is definite that JeM is well entrenched in Pakistan. This action after 12 days is highly commendable.”

Singh said: “The entire onus was on the PM to act, and he gave a free hand to the defence forces. These kinds of activities will help to break the militants’ back. Air Force finished the job in precise 13 minutes.”

Khan said: “Our jawans have shown the mettle. Today’s surgical strike at three places was following intelligence information. Mirage 2000 jets targeted only the training camps of JeM. Thirteen camps have been destroyed. Governments can change, but when it comes to national security we cannot compromise on that. Credit goes to our heroic jawans and our forces.”

Tripathi said: “On the diplomatic front, more work needs to be done. China has called an emergency meeting of organisation of oil countries, India has also been called, and it is likely that Kashmir will be discussed there. On the diplomatic front, we need to scale down our relations with Pakistan.”

Raina said: “I congratulate the Air Force and Prime Minister Modi for today’s move. This is like a little trailer for Pakistan.”

Raju said: “India has taken a big, commendable step. Till now these militant camps never thought that India could retaliate in this way. Now there is an opportunity with Pakistan to control militant activities taking birth on its soil.”

Bakshi said: “Options before Pakistan are much reduced, and we can easily handle that. In Pakistan, it is the army diktat that runs. Here we have democracy and without government approval, nothing gets done. So the credit certainly goes to the government, as the government has to bear the costs and repercussions etc.”

Khan said: “We have to see the repercussions from Pakistan. JeM headquarters are provided security by the Pak army.”

Chaturvedi said: “Today’s move has changed the scenario in many ways. One, it should be clear that our fight is not with the  common man in Pakistan but with the militants; second, now pressure is on Pak army; third,  we have used political, economic and strategic forces together, and this should continue.”

Tripathi said: “We have been successful in anti- terrorist attacks on land. We should now try to finish militancy in Kashmir completely.”

Raina said: “We work in a democratic way.  We should not be scared of any Pak retaliatory act.”

Khan said: “We should have banned PDP. How do they mention in their manifesto that Pak currency should be in India? We need to strengthen our internal agencies as well.”

Bakshi said: “Law is never in any vaccuum. It has to be in the context of time and space, and Art 35 A should be seen in today’s perspective.”

Raina said: “We all need to come together to instill confidence among Kashmiris.”

Raju said: “The problem is taht even leaders talk differently. For example, Omar Abdullah talks in a different way in Parliament, and in a different way when he is addressing the voters.”

Khan said: “Any party supporting terrorism should be banned. PoK is our land only, where we have attacked today.”
