The fact that the party declared its candidate for a politically important seat like Lucknow at the last moment shows its lack of seriousness, says Mudda panellist
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s popularity was put to test in the state’s civic polls and so far it seems that he will be victorious. The BJP is leading in most of the seats with BSP giving the saffron party a tough fight. From CM, to other top leaders of BJP, everybody had done excessive campaigning ahead of the elections. But the other opposition parties were nowhere to be seen in the election arena.
The show was anchored by Anant Tyagi. The panellists were Congress spokesperson Hilal Naqvi, Samajwadi Party MLC Rajpal Kashyap, BJP spokesperson Anila Singh, BSP leader Ummed Singh, Dalit thinker S R Darapuri and APN Consulting Editor Govind Pant Raju (from Lucknow).
Contemplating over the reasons why Congress couldn’t make a dent in the elections, Naqvi said that the party’s ground cadre is demoralised after so many failures and may be that is the reason why they couldn’t work with much enthusiasm for the elections. However, he said that the vote share of Congress has definitely increased and the party will think over the reasons of its failure.
He also blamed it on the faulty EVMs used in the elections. “There were 77 EVMs that were found out to be faulty. We will contemplate on our defeat but with such faulty EVMs at play, democracy is also at stake,” said Naqvi.
When asked about the allegation on faulty EVMs in the elections, where any button pressed gives a vote to BJP, the BJP spokesperson Anila Singh made a funny comment saying: “It is because we have the blessings of Lord Shri Ram.” She went on to make personal comments on Rahul Gandhi saying that if the party is so confident about Gandhi, then they should drop the surname ‘Gandhi’ and instead take up the surname of “Jahangir who was his grandfather”.
Speaking on the Dalit equation in the elections, Darapuri said that it could be possible that the Dalits might have voted for BJP in a hope that the party will work towards the community’s benefit. He also added that the Dalits living in cities have voted for the BSP, the reason why the party fared well as compared to others.
Raju concluded the respective defeats and victories of every party by saying that the BJP had prepared well for the elections whereas the other parties did not take it seriously. He said that the fact that the Congress declared its candidate for a politically important seat like Lucknow at the last moment shows “how serious Congress was”, said Raju. He appreciated the BSP as the party had done ground-level preparation, the results of which could be seen in the elections. BSP is the only party which has fared well till now, besides BJP.
