Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, a minister in the outgoing cabinet of Captain Amarinder Singh, is most likely to be the next Chief Minister of Punjab, a day after his Congress colleague Captain Amarinder Singh resigned from the top post.
A formal announcement is likely to be made shortly after a go-ahead from the party high command.
Randhawa’s name is doing the rounds among the probables to be the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in Punjab.
The names of former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar, the party’s current state unit president Navjot Singh Sidhu, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa are doing the rounds.
A three-time MLA, the 62-year-old Congressman represents the Dera Baba Nanak constituency.
Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa is a traditional Congressman whose association with Congress is not of one generation. His father Santokh Singh was in Congress and has served as the state unit chief twice.
Sukhjinder Singh has been the vice president of the Punjab Congress unit in past. He was the minister in charge of jails and cooperatives in Amarinder Singh’s government.
Earlier, when asked that his name was among the frontrunners, Randhawa had said he or his family never hankers for any post. He said the party senior leadership has not only to talk to the MLAs but other stalwarts too before finalizing the name.
Randhawa had earlier this year joined hands with Navjot Singh Sidhu, and had targeted his own government over alleged failure to fulfill the promises made in the run-up to the 2017 polls including those related to the sacrilege incidents in 2015.
On Amarinder Singh’s outbursts against Navjot Singh Sidhu, after he resigned as chief minister, Randhawa termed it as unfortunate that a senior leader had used such words.
Captain resigned as the chief minister of Punjab with less than five months to go for the Assembly polls after a bruising power struggle with state party chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and had said that he felt humiliated over the way the party handled the protracted crisis.
