The Mumbai Police has told the Bombay High Court that they were duty bound to file an FIR against late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s sisters after complainant Rhea Chakorborty disclosed cognisable offences that needed investigation. The police also sought dismissal of a petition filed by Rajput’s sisters Meetu Singh and Priyanka Singh seeking relief from the probe.
The two had filed a petition to dismiss the FIR lodged against them for alleged forgery and fabrication of a medical prescription for their brother. It was in September that Rajput’s sisters were booked by the Bandra police.
In the affidavit filed on Monday at the Bombay High Court, Nikhil Kapse, senior inspector of Bandra Police, dismissed allegations that they were damaging the reputation of the deceased or the petitioners.
The police said the FIR filed against the two sisters were based on information given by Chakraborty disclosing commission of offence. The police is not at all trying to influence or derail the probe being done by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case, the affidavit added.
The affidavit said Chakraborty had complained about a bogus medical prescription sent by Priyanka and Meetu Singh with the help of a Delhi-based doctor, which prescribed medicines related to anxiety to Sushant. The administration of psychotropic substances may have contributed to Rajput’s suicidal death, the actor is said to have told the police.
The CBI had earlier opposed the registration of FIR against Rajput’s sisters, saying that it vitiates the law. Responding to this, the police said in the affidavit that the CBI probe into Rajput’s death was initiated by his father, while the FIR lodged by Chakraborty seeks probe into the Rajput sisters’ involvement in the death. Now, the CBI has to investigate both the FIRs and file appropriate reports, it added.
Meanwhile, Chakraborty, who is currently undergoing multiple investigations related to the death of Rajput, had recently asked the Bombay High Court not to quash the case against his two sisters.
The 34-year-old actor was found hanging at his residence in Bandra on June 14 this year.
