The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Saturday announced a 19-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England starting next month. The selectors have picked Suryakumar Yadav, Rahul Tewatia and Ishan Kishan as a maiden call for their brilliant performances in the Indian Premier League 2020. Yadav, Tewatia and Kishan, gets their much-awaited call after scoring consistent runs in domestic cricket as well as in IPL in the past couple of years.
Suryakumar Yadav has proved himself as the backbone of Mumbai Indians’ batting over the years. Questions were raised when Suryakumar Yadav did not pick for the series in Australia. Kishan had also got the call on a day when he smashed 173 off 93 balls for Jharkhand in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Tewatia, who plays for Rajasthan Royals and Haryana, had smashed West Indian Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in an over in the IPL last year to pull off a stunning win for his team.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant also returned to the limited-overs set-up after his match-winning knocks in the red-ball series against Australia.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned to the squad after recovering from the injury while Jasprit Bumrah got rest after playing regular cricket in the past couple of months. Bhuvneshwar returns to the side having recovered from a hamstring injury he suffered in the IPL last year. He recently played for UP in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Bhuvneshwar will lead the Indian pace attack alongside Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini, Shardul Thakur and T. Natrajan. Left-arm pacer T Natarajan has also retained following an impressive debut series in Australia.
Manish Pandey, Ravindra Jadeja, Sanju Samson, Mayank Agarwal and Kuldeep Yadav who were the part of the T20 squad in Australia tour have missed out his place in the T2OI squad. Mohammad Shami and Ravindra Jadeja were not included in the squad as they are still recovering from injuries suffered during Australia tour. Axar Patel is a like-for-like replacement for Jadeja.
Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who missed the Australia series due to an injury, has also been picked up by the team management.
All five games will be played at Ahmedabad’s Motera Stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world.
