The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday nominated Sushmita Dev, who recently joined the party, to the upper house of Parliament.
By-polls for six Rajya Sabha seats across five states, which have been vacant due to resignation or death of a sitting MP, will take place on October 4.
The Trinamool Congress’s official handle tweeted that the party is extremely pleased to nominate Sushmita Dev to the Upper House of the Parliament. Mamata Banerjee’s vision to empower women and ensure their maximum participation in politics shall help our society to achieve much more!
According to political analysts, Dev has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha as she had been campaigning in Assam and Tripura with the objective of expanding party’s cadre and influence in the northeast.
However, Dev, who was one of the national spokespersons of the Congress and its women’s wing chief, switched over to the Mamata Banerjee-led camp last month. Quitting the party after three-decade-long period, Dev had said she has good equation with Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi but has to answer her people.
Dev, who party workers said was in disbelief when the nomination was announced, tweeted: I am overwhelmed. I am extremely grateful to Mamata di and Abhishek (Banerjee). I don’t know whether I deserve it or not, but I will do my best to take party’s vision forward. It’s great to see that she wants more women in Parliament.
Dev is the daughter of Assam Congress stalwart and influential Bengali leader Santosh Mohan Dev and had earlier been an MP from Silchar in Assam, the stronghold of her father.
