In his first speech after winning the presidency, US President-elect Joe Biden pledged to be a President who would not divide the country but unite it. Addressing an outdoor rally in his home city of Wilmington, Delaware, the Democrat said it was time to heal America. The 77-year-old, who would become the oldest president in the history of the United States, said he sought the office the restore the soul of America, to rebuild its backbone and make the country respected in the eyes of the world again.
Talking about disappointed Trump supporters, Biden said they were not their enemies but Americans. He said it was time to put an end to the era of demonization. Reciting words from Psalm 91, a verse in the Bible, Biden said he hopes it provides comfort to those who lost a loved one to the coronavirus pandemic this year.
Biden who needed 270 electoral votes to win the race to White House reached the threshold with victory in the battleground state of Pennsylvania after four days of suspense. Biden’s victory also cleared the way for US Senator Kamala Harris who will be the first woman, the first Black American and the first American of Asian descent to be the vice president. Trump is yet to concede defeat and has said that the election is far from over. He has filed a number of lawsuits challenging the results and alleging fraud. However, legal experts are of the opinion that Trump does not have much hope as he has not been able to procure evidence of any significant fraud.
