Venkatesh Iyer, a name that has been emerged since the start of the UAE leg of IPL 2021. In his IPL debut against RCB, Iyer smashed an unbeaten 41 runs and against Mumbai Indians he took on some biggest names in world cricket – Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult and Adam Milne – smashing 53 runs in 30 balls.
Iyer was born in a family of doctors, engineers and teachers. No one from his family was interested in sports. Venkatesh Iyer an MBA graduate in finance, has turned down many offers from big companies to pursue his career in cricket. In 2018, Venkatesh turned down an offer from Deloitte, one of the biggest accounting firms in India, as he wanted to become a cricketer. His father Rajasekaran Iyer was against this step, but it was her mother Usha Iyer, who is a nurse in a hospital in Indore, allowed him to follow his dream.
Born on December 25, 1994, Iyer plays for Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket. He made his debut in T20 cricket in Syed Mushtaq Ali Tournament against Rilways in 2015. Same year he also made his debut in List A cricket against Saurashtra. He made his first-class debut for Madhya Pradesh in Ranji Trophy 2018.
Venkatesh said in an interview, it’s not that he opted cricket as a career because he is not good at studies, if he was not playing cricket then he must have got admission in any IIT or, IIM in country. Iyer further added that, he didn’t had to put lots of effort to manage both, that he has always been a bright student.
In 2021 IPL auction, Iyer bagged a Rs. 20 lakh contract with Indian Premier League franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders. Former Indian captain and current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly is the inspiration Venkatesh Iyer. In his early age, Iyer was a right handed batsman but following his idol Sourav Ganguly, he transformed himself into a left handed batsman.
Iyer made a grand entry in IPL 2021 for KKR, he would want to continue his form in upcoming matches. Iyer can also bowl with medium pace.
