Akhilesh Yadav: Switch off lights to protest growing unemployment, economic distress

Speaking out about the rising unemployment in the country, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday urged the people to switch off lights for nine minutes at 9 pm tonight. In his tweet, Yadav implored people to come together and light the torch of revolution by switching off lights and expressing solidarity with the jobless youth and their families, who are facing the darkness of unemployment. The former Uttar Pradesh CM urged people to tweet and share their reactions with the hashtags #9Baje9Minute, #NoMoreBJP.

Putting the onus of providing employment on the Central government, he asked what was the fault of the youths that they have been rendered jobless. According to him, switching off lights in the night was an attempt to highlight the woes of the jobless. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party leader Anurag Bhadauria attacked the Narendra Modi government saying it had not done anything and said that educated youth with degrees were sitting idle at home and getting frustrated.

The Uttar Pradesh Congress also asked people to light candles and earthen lamps at the same time on September 9. The UP Congress added that this would remove the dark clouds of arrogance from the eyes of the failed government.

It may be recalled that PM Modi had asked people to light candles, lamps and switch on their flashlights on their mobile phones for nine minutes from 9 pm on April 5 in solidarity with the collective fight against Covid-19.

The Modi government is increasingly coming under the opposition attack in the backdrop of rampant unemployment and a steep decline in the economy because of the complete lockdown announced by the Union government in March this year with the onset of Covid-19 pandemic. India’s GDP growth has also contracted by a record minus 23.9 per cent between April and June.

A few days ago, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi had linked unemployment levels with the Modi government’s drive to privatise public sector units.
