Senior Communist leader and former Tamil Nadu state secretary of the Communist Party of India(CPI) D Pandian passed away in Chennai on Friday.The 88-year-old was on life support in Rajiv Gandhi General government hospital after his health worsened.
On Wednesday, the veteran politician was admitted to the hospital in an unconscious state. According to hospital dean Dr E Theranirajan, he had chronic kidney disease, for which he was on regular haemodialysis. As his condition worsened, he was put on life-saving medications and ventilator support in the intensive care unit till he breathed his last.
Pandian held the position of state secretary of the party for nearly six years till 2015, when he was succeeded by R Mutharasan. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1989 from the Madras constituency representing United Communist Party of India(UCPI). He then won the same seat in the 1991 elections.
Recalling Pandian’s personality, Mutharasan said he was a fighter throughout life right from his student days. He succeeded in all those battles and we expected him to successfully overcome this battle too.
Further Mutharasan said he was fortunate to move with such a leader in various capacities for more than five decades.His demise is no ordinary loss but big loss to the nation.As a mark of respect, the CPI red flag will fly half-mast to mourn his death, added the CPI state secretary.

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan mourned the demise of the veteran leader. He tweeted Pandian’s death is a huge loss to Tamil Nadu politics. TTV Dhinakaran of AMMK also tweeted, I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of the late D Pandian, a veteran Communist leader and former Member of Parliament.
While CPM state secretary K Balakrishnan called Pandian’s demise as shocking and disturbing. He said Pandian as a man with an ever-smiling face could lighten a tense moment. It is a big loss for Communist movement and Tamil Nadu, he added.
