The festivities of this festival takes place after the nine-day festival of Navratri, and with this begins the preparation of Diwali, which falls exactly 20 days later. According to Ramayana, this day is celebrated as Lord Rama defeated the Lanka King Ravana who carried Sita. On this day, people burn effigies of Ravana, Megnath, and Kumbkaran. Apart from this, people from the Eastern and North-Eastern parts of the country observe Durga pooja to celebrate the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahisasur.
