The Delhi High Court today denied bail to former Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate, on the ground that prima facie allegations against him are serious in nature and he played an active and key role in the offense.
Justice Suresh Kait said that the wrong message will be sent to the society if bail is granted to Chidambaram in this case. Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram will have to stay in jail at least till the end of this month as a Delhi court has extended his judicial custody till November 27. Chidambaram is currently lodged in Tihar jail under judicial custody in the case.
The Congress leader appeared before the court through video conferencing due to the ongoing lawyers’ strike in the courts across the national capital. He was produced before the court at the end of his judicial custody on Wednesday.
Earlier on Wednesday, a special court in New Delhi extended the judicial custody of Chidambaram till November 27 in connection with the matter which is being investigated by the ED.
Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI on August 21 in the INX Media corruption case and is currently in the ED custody in a related money laundering matter. The CBI had registered an FIR on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007, during Chidambaram’s tenure as finance minister
