The BJP released a video in which the host says he got idlis from a hotel since there were too many people.
A Dalit youth has filed a complaint with Mandya police against Karnataka BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa on Saturday, for practicing untouchability by eating hotel made idlis at a Dalit’s house.
Complainant Venkatesh D said that during his visit to a Dalit house in Chitradurga district on Friday, the food that the former Chief Minister had was brought from a nearby hotel and not prepared by the family.
The complainant also said the alleged act would send a wrong message to society.
“We received the complaint on Saturday and would take necessary action after looking into the matter,” Mandya police said.
The BJP state unit dismissed claims of untouchability and released a video as evidence. In the video, Hanumanthaiah, the host, is heard saying, “The idlis had to be brought from hotel as there were more people, who came along with Yeddyurappa.”
“The complaint is politically motivated and lodged by those who have been shaken by the Dalit outreach programme. Their frustration is palpable,” a BJP spokesperson said.
“The reason for having breakfast at a Dalit’s home was to send out a message that the BJP and I are for a socially equitable society. But what can I say when people are criticising me for having breakfast bought from outside?” said Yeddyurappa.
The ruling Congress and opposition Janata Dal (Secular) hit back at Yeddyurappa saying he was discriminating against the Scheduled Castes.
