In a development welcomed by entrepreneurs, the Greenfield Airport at Gautam Budh Nagar’s Jewar has been given in-principle approval by Central government’s Project Monitoring and Implementation Committee, said media reports.

Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) Chairman Prabhat Kumar said on Twitter: “Happy to inform that Steering Committee headed by Secretary Civil Aviation, GOI today in its meeting considered proposal for In-Principle approval of Jewar Airport and have granted In- Principle approval. Another important mile stone successfully cleared by Jewar Airport.”

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Civil Aviation set up the said panel to expedite the completion of the project and said that the foundation stone of Jewar airport could be laid as early as October this year, said a report in The Indian Express (IE). Around 5,000 ha land has been identified by YEIDA for the project, of which 240 ha belongs to the state government and rest is with private owners. The first phase of acquisition by YEIDA of land measuring 1,327 ha for construction of terminal buildings and runways is expected to be initiated in June 2018, the IE reported.

The detailed project report and techno-economic feasibility report for the project has been prepared by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC).

If all the land required for it is purchased or acquired within a year, the airport can be made operational by 2022, said a report in The Times of India, quoting the PwC report.Jewar airport near Noida gets in-principle approval

The government will follow the PPP mode for its development and work will take place in four phases with approximately Rs 15,754 crore to be spent on it.

The airport will have two runways with a capacity to handle 70 million passengers annually. The cargo airport will be developed to handle 3 million metric tonnes per year.

“The meeting in Delhi was attended by principal secretary (civil aviation) SP Goyal and other senior members of the government. Work on the project had started in April 2017 and it is because of the coordination between the centre and the state that within one year it has been accorded an in-principle approval. On July 6, 2017, the steering committee had given it site clearance. The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority has been appointed the nodal agency for this project,” said a senior government official.

The in-principle approval to the airport project came 16 years after it was conceived by the Uttar Pradesh government. Since nothing happened in the last decade-and-a-half, many were sceptical of the approval without further delay.

On June 24, 2017, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) had given its approval for work to begin on the techno-economic feasibility report (TEFR) of an international airport at Jewar.

The approval for the site was received after Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister Yogi Adityanath revived the project in 2017 by sending a proposal to the ministry.

Builders, entrepreneurs and other businessmen are upbeat after the in-principle approval to the airport project at Jewar, with the hope that it would fuel local economy, said media reports.

Entrepreneurs said that the Jewar airport will do for Noida what the Indira Gandhi International airport has done for Gurugram.

“It’s big news for the real estate business in this region because the airport will be the biggest job creator here. It will benefit Noida, Greater Noida and the Yamuna Expressway region as it will bring investment from global investors and create local businesses,” said Vipin Malhan, president, Noida entrepreneur association, according to a media report.
