Kangana Ranaut to play former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Sai Kabir’s political period drama

Ranaut took to Twitter to make the official announcement of her upcoming film. She wrote, happy to collaborate with dear friend Sai Kabir on a political drama which will be produced by Manikarnika films.

Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut is all set to essay the iconic role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in an upcoming film directed by Sai Kabir. The yet-to-be-titled film will not be a biopic, but will cover significant moments of Indian political history, said the actor.

Ranaut took to Twitter to make the official announcement of her upcoming film. She wrote, happy to collaborate with dear friend Sai Kabir on a political drama which will be produced by Manikarnika films.

Sharing a throwback picture of herself dressed up as the former PM, the actor said this photoshoot about the iconic women she did in the beginning of her career. Little did she know that one day she will get to play the iconic leader on screen.

In one of her tweets, Ranaut also shared a few pictures of late Indira Gandhi along with late writer Khushwant Singh’s description of her, which read, she was very beautiful, not pin up girl type beautiful, her face was like when all the swords are drawn just before the King’s command.

Talking about the movie, Ranaut, in a statement, said the film will not be a biopic but will cover the significant moments of Indian political history including Operation Blue and The Emergency. The script is in the final stages and the project is being worked on. The grand period film will be a political drama that will help the present generation to understand the socio-political landscape of current India. Many prominent actors will be part of the film, added the actor.

Director Sai Kabir has earlier collaborated with Ranaut in Revolver Rani. He had written the story, screenplay and directed the project. According to the sources, the screenplay of the political drama is ready as Sai reportedly discussed the venture with Ranaut on the sets of Dhaakad.

Besides this political drama, Ranaut will also be seen in the role of the late Tamil Nadu chief Minister Jayalalitha in the upcoming biopic titled Thalaivi. The actor recently wrapped up the shooting of the biopic. Also, she recently announced the second installment of the period drama Manikarnika franchise, Manikarnika Returns: The Legend of Didda. 

Meanwhile, Ranaut is currently shooting for action drama Dhaakad, in which she plays a female assassin.
