Kapil Dev says it would be impossible for Dhoni to perform if he plays only IPL

Former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev has said that it would not be possible for Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra singh Dhoni to perform if he plays only in Indian Premier League. Dev said that at the age of 39, it is important for Dhoni to get match practice so that his body is tuned for the game. Dev said lack of match practice was the reason for his dismal performance in the ongoing season of IPL.

Kapil Dev in conversation with a television channel said that Dhoni’s bad run in this season does not take anything away from his achievements. He added that the CSK skipper must play first-class cricket to stay in touch with the game. He said Dhoni is going through a rough phase and we will have to see how he comes out of it.

Putting his retirement speculation to rest, Dhoni had recently said that he will be available to play for CSK in 2021 as well. The three-time champions had a pathetic run this season and finished at the bottom of the table. This was the first time the yellow army failed to make it to the top-four stage of the tournament. Dip in Dhoni’s form was one of the biggest factors behind Chennai’s bad performance. Known for his fierce batting, the CSK captain failed to score a single half-century this season. He scored 200 runs from 14 matches with an average of 25.

Dhoni retired from all forms of International cricket in August this year. The next season of IPL is scheduled to be held in April –May next year. Now, it would be interesting to see if Dhoni does turn up for the edition or the franchise decided to let go of him and looks for another captain.
