Karnataka added students, workers going abroad to Covid vaccination priority list

In a major relief for students who are going abroad for studies and those who need to go overseas to get employed, the National Health Mission on Monday included them in the revised priority list for Covid vaccination in Karnataka. The drive will be launched at 3pm on Tuesday at the administrative block of Bengaluru City University.

The Karnataka government on Monday revised its priority list for Covid vaccination by adding four more categories including students going to foreign countries for their studies from June 1. The other groups who will be vaccinated on priority are those going abroad for jobs, workers of milk cooperative societies and cable operators.

Deputy chief minister and state Covid task force chief C N Ashwath Narayana said the revised list also included persons going to other countries for employment, workers of milk co-operative societies and cable operators. Narayana also said there was a demand from these sections to facilitate vaccination on priority. Those who wish to get inoculated should possess visas, admission receipts or any such relevant documents with them. He said that the certificates confirming the completion of the vaccination will be issued on the spot.

Covishield vaccine will be administered in this vaccination drive and the gap between the two shots will be six weeks. The National Health Mission has also said workers of milk co-operative societies and cable operators to this list of those who will be vaccinated.

Eligible beneficiaries can walk in for vaccination, the deputy CM’s office said, adding that the drive for students will continue at BCU. Among these groups, those who have received a first dose of Covishield will be allowed to take the second shot even if they have not completed the mandated time gap of six weeks.

The chief commissioner of civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and all the district commissioners have been asked to issue the necessary eligibility certificates to students going to foreign countries and those who need to travel to get employed in other countries based on the verification of documents.
