In a shocking incident, Shivraj Paswan, Mayor of Bihar’s Katihar district was shot dead on Thursday night by three armed assailants. Police have reportedly arrested four people in the case.
The killing comes a day after the daylight murder of Uttam Anand, Additional Sessions Judge of Dhanbad by an autorickshaw when he was out for a jog in the Jharkhand town.
The incident took place near Santoshi Mandir Chowk of the city police station area, where the Mayor with his driver was returning home in the evening. When he got off his vehicle to meet his supporters, three armed assailants on a bike opened fire at him. Following he was immediately rushed to the Katohar Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead by the medical authorities.
Police have conducted the post mortem of the Mayor’s body late in the evening. So far, the police officials have not said anything on what is the reason behind the incident. The arrested accused are from the city police station and adjoining areas. The Mayor’s family has named 12 people in the FIR.
Talking about the incident, District Magistrate Udayan Mishra said that the mayor was going to the Santoshi temple as usual, and the miscreants were already waiting for him to ambush. When he reached there, they opened fire indiscriminately, of which three bullets hit the mayor. He said the police have started raids to arrest the criminals. He further claimed that the mayor’s murderer would be revealed within 48 hours.
The death of the 38-year-old Mayor has shocked the people of Katihar. The locals have gathered to show support and staged a protest outside the hospital. The murder has raised questions about the law and order situation in the city. People have also surrounded the police station premises and raised slogans against the police.
It is being said that Shivraj’s death will certainly impact local politics since the political graph of the youth leader was rapidly increasing in Katihar. Before being elected as the Mayor of the district, he was a ward councilor for almost 15 years and was very due to his friendly nature.
