Rahul Gandhi says lockdown only option to curb Covid-19 spread, accuses government of killing innocents by inaction

Gandhi said he just wants to make it clear that a lockdown is now the only option because of a complete lack of strategy by the government.

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the steps taken by the central government till now will not be able to curb rapidly spreading Covid-19 infection in India. He also accused the government of killing people through its inaction.

Gandhi tweeted that the only way to stop the spread of Corona now is a full lockdown – with the protection of NYAY for the vulnerable sections. He also said the GOI (Government of India) doesn’t get it. Gandhi also said the government’s inaction is killing many innocent people.

In another tweet, Gandhi said he just wants to make it clear that a lockdown is now the only option because of a complete lack of strategy by the government. They allowed, rather, they actively helped the virus reach this stage where there’s no other way to stop it. A crime has been committed against India, he said.

The Wayanad MP mentioned his party’s NYAY or Nyuntam Aay Yojana (Minimum Income Scheme) that it had proposed in its 2019 general election manifesto, promising families in the bottom 20 per cent of the economic strata a minimum of Rs 72,000 a year as guaranteed income. He said NYAY scheme can help with protection of the vulnerable sections of the society.

He had promised poll-bound Kerala that the scheme would be tested in the state if the party-led alliance was voted to power in the Assembly election held last month.

However, the BJP was quick to hit back at Gandhi for his tweet today, accusing him of playing cheap politics over the pandemic. The saffron party’s National in-charge of Information & Technology said the only person who doesn’t get it is – Rahul Gandhi. Using the pandemic for cheap political thrills is a new low even by Rahul Gandhi’s otherwise low standards. He also cited Gandhi’s earlier stand against a lockdown.
