Trinamool Congress’s senior MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay on Thursday said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is the face of opposition against Narendra Modi, not Rahul Gandhi.
In Trinamool’s internal meeting, Bandyopadhyay made it clear the party is not talking about the alliance with Congress. He said he has observed Rahul Gandhi for a long time but the latter has still not developed himself as an alternative to PM Modi in 2024 general elections. The entire country roots for Banerjee so the Trinamool will keep the CM’s face in the campaign.
At a time, when the opposition parties are uniting against the NDA for the general elections, Bandyopadhyay’s comment is being seen as a big statement by the TMC. The Trinamool has high regard for Congress President Sonia Gandhi but when it comes to Rahul the party leaders have always expressed their reservations.
The Trinamool Congress has time and again cleared its stance that party leaders want Mamata Banerjee to be the face of opposition. However, the Bengal CM has maintained that for her opposition unity matters more than her designation.
A quick analysis of Mamata Banerjee’s Delhi visit shows that it was full of opposition unity. However, when the Parliament session started, Rahul Gandhi’s breakfast unity meet was attended by the TMC but the TMC suggested that they were more interested in opposition unity programs and did not agree to everything organised by Rahul Gandhi.
After the spectacular win of Mamata Banerjee in assembly polls this year, the Trinamool has stressed that in the bigg battle in 2024, Congress is a co-warrior, not the boss. This sentiment was emphasised by Bandyopadhyay as well.
